GUIDED WEIPA FLY FISHING CHARTERS

Weipa fly fishing charters are a specialty service at Weipa Sports Fishing. We offer a variety of guided fly fishing charters, to a range of destinations, offering many different fly fishing situations and experiences. We cater to everyone from the novice fly fisherman through to the experts.

On any given day, you could find yourself stalking the crystal clear flats, sight casting to golden trevally and cobia that cruise behind manta rays, or casting to blue bastards and barramundi lurking around rocky outcrops. There’s also cruising queenfish, GTs, permit and many others. More recently the elusive milkfish have been taking a fly.

WEIPA FLY FISHING

Your Weipa fly fishing day could be spent up the creek, casting popper flies at the silver-scaled barramundi that stalk the various gutters and drains that show on low tides or sinking deceivers into fallen snags to entice mangrove jacks and fingermark.

Weipa also has some spectacular bluewater fishing. At times the offshore bait balls are nothing short of mind blowing, with huge schools of baitfish turning as one, creating spectacular lightning flashes below the surface of the water, as they turn to evade the crashing runs from the predators.

Long-tail tuna, GTs, bull sharks, queenfish and Spanish Mackerel work these hard, and can be found slicing through the massive bait balls for an easy feed.

When fly fishing in and around Weipa, it’s not uncommon to catch over 45 species in a week.

THE BEST TACKLE AND EVERYTHING ELSE

In northern Australia, fly fishers typically rely on robust, saltwater-ready gear designed to handle hard-fighting species such as barramundi, queenfish, golden trevally, tuna and permit. The most common setup starts with 8- to 10-weight fly rods, offering enough backbone to cast larger flies, punch through wind and control powerful fish. These rods are usually paired with corrosion-resistant, sealed-drag fly reels capable of holding plenty of backing, as long blistering runs are common in tropical waters. Floating or intermediate fly lines are standard in estuaries and creek systems, while fast-sinking lines are essential offshore when targeting species feeding deeper. Leaders are typically built with heavy fluorocarbon bite tippets—often 40–80 lb—to withstand sharp gill plates, reef edges and the abrasive mouths of species like barramundi and Spanish mackerel.

Fly selection is equally important, with patterns designed to mimic local baitfish, prawns and crabs. Popular choices include Clousers, Deceivers, Pink Things, and various crab patterns for sight-fishing flats one of our most popular flys would be the 1/0 white clouser. Many anglers also carry poppers or baitfish flies for chasing queenfish and trevally on the surface. Terminal tackle is kept simple but strong, with quality saltwater hooks gamakatsu SL are best and loop-to-loop connections preferred for reliability in remote areas. Accessories such as stripping gloves, polarised sunglasses and waterproof packs round out a typical northern kit, ensuring anglers are prepared for the tough conditions, sudden weather changes and demanding fish that make northern Australia one of the world’s premier saltwater fly fishing destinations.
